EDI 6010: Differentiation and Learning Theory – 3 credits
Introduction to the philosophy, learning theory and theoretical perspective of differentiation. Examination of ways that classrooms can effectively support differentiating instruction and assessment to address the complex challenges of meeting the diverse learning needs and levels of all students.
Challenge: The main objective of the online and face-to-face course was to have participants understand how to adapt their course content, pedagogical practices and assessments to meet the needs of a wide range of students that may be assigned to a classroom.
The course however, was not taught using the same differentiated principles which were promoted throughout the course. Almost all assignments in the online course were written papers or discussion boards. The face-to-face course consisted of lectures with no consistent recommendations on which student centered active learning activities would support the objectives of each course module.
